Description LARGE NETSUKE OF SENNIN GAMA WITH HIS TOAD ON HIS SHOULDER. Japan. 18th c. Ivory with expressive, amber yellow patina. Standing, supported on a knotted branch, is he dressed in a wide robe, over which he wears a leaf collar and apron. Although the carver did not remove much of the triangular piece of the precious material, he succeeded in creating a powerfully expressive netsuke. This is particularly evident in the soft folds of the garment and the upward-looking face as well as in the long, curled hair in the neck. H.10.5cm. Condition A/B. Provenance: -Old German private collection. -Purchased in Klefisch Auction 60, Lot 544.
