This imposing two volume edition of the Four Gospels of the New Testament (in French) is over-shadowed by its engravings designed by the French painter Alexandre Bida (1813-1895) Of the 128 fine engravings by Alexandre Bida, 28 are Bida originals, and 100 are after illustrations by the likes of H. Browne, Bracquemond, Chaplin, Deblois, L. Ed. Girardet, Haussoullier, Massard, Celestin Nanteuil, and Veyrassat and others, under the direction of Edmund Hedouin. Alexandre Bida along with Gustave Dore was one of the foremost illustrators of the Bible in the 19th century as the illustrations here display. Bound in 3/4 red morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles to spines. Heavy wove paper stock throughout. A very good set.
