Mid 7th century BC. A dark brown ceramic vessel with high trumpet foot, globular body, large flat overhanging ribbed rim, distinctive shoulder, encircled by an applied ring, and two horizontal handles on opposite sides of the body, with three large vertical ribs either side. 5.6 kg, 39cm wide (15 1/4"). Private collection, London; acquired on the art market in the 1980s. An impressive example of impasto ware production, most of which were discovered inside the chamber tombs around the Etruscan cities of Vulci or Volsinii. Fine condition, some restoration, small hole to the shoulder.
