James Peake (c.1839-1918), a late Victorian carved lime and soft wood exhibition quality plaque, dated 1895, decorated with corn, grapes, and berries in a scrolling floral decorated frame, signed and dated 1895, 103cm long, presented in a glazed mahogany display case
?
Provenance- From The Hon. William McAlpine Collection
James Peake was listed in the census of 1871 as a carver and gilder at 274-6 Waterloo Road. In an article in the local newspaper, perhaps dating to about 1914, Peake was described as 'the modern Grinling Gibbons'. According to this account, he was a wood carver's son and was apprenticed to a Mr Gobell for five years from the age of 14, that is probably from about 1853. Subsequently, he undertook work for Archbishop Temple and his family and exhibited at one of the Paris Exhibitions.
