China, 18th century. Well hollowed as a large peach. Finely carved and reticulated in high relief around the sides and on the base with a gnarled, leafy branch bearing peaches. The soapstone with a fine, natural patina and of light gray color with striations of black and scattered russet spots.Provenance: Lionel de Rothschild (1882-1942). Lionel de Rothschild was a British banker and Conservative politician best remembered as the creator of Exbury, often considered the finest garden in the United Kingdom.
