Bao Dai was the 13th and final Emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, the last Imperial dynasty of Vietnam. From 1926 to 1945, he was Emperor of Annam. After his abdication in 1945, he remained an important advisor to the new government under Ho Chi Minh but left for France in 1946, until he was persuaded by the French to return as head of state in 1949. He moved back to France in 1954 after the peace deal between the French and the Viet Minh, appointing Ngo Dinh Diem as his prime minister.
