Description SANTA CATHARINA, Frei Lucas de. MEMóRIAS DA ORDEM MILITAR DE S. JO?O DE MALTA. Tomo I. Lisboa Occidental, Na Officina de Joseph Antonio da Sylva, Impressor da Academia Real, 1734. In -fólio peq. de XXXII págs. prels. inums., e 408 nums. afóra uma em branco final. Encaderna??o inteira de carneira da época, sobretudo desgastada na lombada. Bom exemplar, de grandes margens, impresso em papel de linho, embora com acidez ocasional. Frontispício impresso alternadamente a vermelho e preto. Ilustrado com uma gravura alegórica de Vieira Lusitano à ben??o do Arcanjo de Portugal à musa historiadora do autor, no anterrosto, e com a raríssima ?Carta da Ilha de Malta...? em folha desdobrável, que lhe é devida, no fim. Obra clássica, muito procurada, este é o único tomo que se publicou, sendo que os exemplares raramente aparecem no mercado. Nas páginas 273 e 374 vêm respectivamernte os escudos d' armas de D. Frei Louren?o Gil e D. Jo?o de Sousa. Além do que ficou mencionado, o volume apresenta dois bonitos cabe??es alegóricos desta ínclita ordem e duas letras iniciais de desenho de fantasia. Rara e principal obra portuguesa sobre a perene Ordem de Malta. Ex-libris do notável bibliófilo Miguel de Faria, e uma anota??o do mesmo. Muito procurada, com o mapa da ilha de Malta. Entire sheepskin binding of the time, especially worn on the spine. Good copy, with large margins, printed on linen paper, although with occasional acidity. Frontispiece printed alternately in red and black. Illustrated with an allegorical engraving by Vieira Lusitano to the blessing of the Archangel of Portugal to the author's historian muse, in the antertrast, and with the very rare ?Letter from the Island of Malta ...? in a folding sheet, which is due at the end. Classical work, highly sought after, this is the only volume published, with copies rarely appearing on the market. On pages 273 and 374 there are the coat of arms of D. Frei Louren?o Gil and D. Jo?o de Sousa respectively. In addition to what was mentioned, the volume features two beautiful allegorical heads of this unusual order and two initial letters of fantasy design.
