PROVENANCE: From the Collections of Franklin Wood (1924-2019) Cartersville, GA. Franklin was born in a small farmhouse near White GA in 1924. After spending his early childhood on the family farm the family moved to the City of Cartersville where he attended school graduating in 1942. Franklin entered the Navy as a cadet aviator. On March 3, 1943, John was commissioned an Ensign and received his Wings of Gold, becoming one of the Navy's youngest naval aviators. In 1947, Franklin was retired from the Navy. He was a civilian flight instructor, supervisor and squadron commander in the Primary Training Squadron Flying Training Air Force. He met his wife Ying Su while she was attending flight training safety courses. Ying Su came from a prominent family in China. Her family blessed her marriage with numerous pieces of porcelains and Jade. The items in this sale are from her collection. Dimensions (cm): Diameter: 22 Height: 43Chinese Ming Dynasty Period Blue & white Lidded Jar. Potted with a large cylinder vessel, jar shape, having thick and tall potted body, sturdily potted in slight ovoid belly, heavy on shoulder gently tapered on short neck, toward opening mouth prominent, with reverse bowl dome lid finial bud, and raised on flat wide round foot base. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white under glazed base color which contrast against the cobalt blue fine color, depicted of variegate flowers blooms interspersed foliage, enclosed with bordered with dense of floral diaper surrounding Bajixiang symbols inside ruyi shaped cartouches and Each section mark off and enclosed with double fine blue rings lines. A characteristic heaped and piled effect, the under glaze grayish-blue concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep blue-black. This inadvertently gave texture, energy, and shading to the design. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned. The foot base rim reveals the cut edges during the making process, the base left unglazed with grayish creme-brown ground and dark spots of firing marks.
