PROVENANCE: From the Collections of Franklin Wood (1924-2019) Cartersville, GA. Franklin was born in a small farmhouse near White GA in 1924. After spending his early childhood on the family farm the family moved to the City of Cartersville where he attended school graduating in 1942. Franklin entered the Navy as a cadet aviator. On March 3, 1943, John was commissioned an Ensign and received his Wings of Gold, becoming one of the Navy's youngest naval aviators. In 1947, Franklin was retired from the Navy. He was a civilian flight instructor, supervisor and squadron commander in the Primary Training Squadron Flying Training Air Force. He met his wife Ying Su while she was attending flight training safety courses. Ying Su came from a prominent family in China. Her family blessed her marriage with numerous pieces of porcelains and Jade. The items in this sale are from her collection. Dimensions (cm): Height: 34 Diameter: 27Chinese Ming Dynasty Period Yellow glazed amphora Zun Vase. Potted with a large vase, jar shape, having thick and tall potted body, sturdily potted in slight ovoid belly, heavy on shoulder gently tapered on short neck, emerging two gods head on the shoulder, toward opening mouth prominent, with slight flaring opening lip, and raised on flat wide round foot base. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in masterfully covered in an even coat of a deep blue glaze which terminates at the base to reveal the pure white under glaze. The yellow glaze creates a mottled effect around the rim which is likened unto the blushing of human skin. Yellow in Chinese it is called Huang You. The technique of producing it only became matured in the Hongzhi Period of the Ming. There are also high and low temperature glazes. The yellow comes from the ferric oxide in the reducing atmosphere. Its first appearance was in the Tang Dynasty. There are Tender Yellow (Jiao Huang), Wax Yellow (Mi La Huang), Egg Yellow (Dan Huang You) and Eel Yellow (Shan Yu Huang). The foot rim reveals the cut edges during the making process, and the receded central interior base left white under glaze. The glaze is seamless and gives off a beautiful luster, with the colors maintaining excellent vibrancy.
