This superb Shijo drawing of a woman carrying a ladder and a stool on her head is sealed Dozan, a plainly very accomplished artist whose identity remains a mystery. Several drawings by the artist have come on to the market since the 1960s. 26.5cm x 23.5cm
At Christies London on 17th. June 1996 an album of 22 similar drawings by the artist were sold for GBP 3680. The brisk confident brushwork and sensitive colouring is at least as fine as the acknowledged masters of the Shijo style, Nanrei, Chinnen et al.
Condition: It has been backed, probably originally, and has minor pasted paper strips on three corners of the reverse.
Provenance: the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton.
