After Rembrandt van Rijn,
Dutch 1606-1669-
Simeon recognises the infant Jesus as saviour;
etching on laid paper, possibly published by Pierre Francois Basan c.1810, 20x16cm
Note: This example is possibly one of hundred and eighteen etchings from a posthumous publication of Pierre Fran?ois Basan's Receuil, probably published by Henri Louis Basan in Paris around 1810. The plates consist of a combination of re-worked Rembrandt etchings (by Basan?) and copies by Basan after Rembrandt's etchings. The 118 prints are preceded by the original Basan title-page (indicating eighty-five prints and with the address 'Rue et H?tel Serpente, no.14') and two pages with an index of the 85 Basan plates (numbered according to the 1751 Helle-Glomy catalogue). Pierre-Fran?ois Basan published various editions of the Recueil between 1789 and 1797. Later editions did not always contain the 85 original Basan plates and this edition contains one hundred and eighteen prints. After the death of Pierre-Fran?ois Basan his son, Henri Louis Basan, continued publishing. See British Museum item no. 1941,0327.11.1 for notes.Please refer to department for condition report
