engraving, inscribed within the plate, 17x14cm Note: This drawing depicts the eighteenth-century translator John Hoole. Hoole was best known for translating influential contemporary works from Italian into English, including Jerusalem Delivered (1763) by Tarquino Tasso and Orlando Furioso (1773-83) by Ariosto. Hoole was also known for his close connection and friendship with the famous lexicographer Samuel Johnson.
