Philips Zilcken,
Dutch 1857-1930-
Despair;
etching, signed, inscribed Paris and dated 24 in pencil, 49x34.5cm.
Note: This work is by the Dutch artist Philips Zilcken. Zilcken studied under Karel Klinkenberg and Anton Mauve. After spending time at the Societe des aquafortistes in France, Zilcken became the secretary of its Dutch equivalent, Nederlandsche Etsclub, between 1885 and 1896. As this shows, Zilcken had a particular interest in the techniques of etching and engraving, and his ability to imbue works produced in this medium with an extreme emotional intensity is powerfully illustrated by this piece.Please refer to department for condition report
