The Lwalwa mask is an ?mvondo? mask which is wore by men. The Lwalwa masks display a balanced composition, an enlarged angular nose, a protruding mouth and narrow slotted eyes. These sharply delineated features give Lwalwa art an almost geometric appearance. The shapes of the nose are modeled after different birds. The choreography of masked dances was highly complex and had to appease the spirits of the ancestors and compel them to intervene. The Lwala are famous for their dancing and masks which plays an important part in their celebrations, epically for the initiation of young men into adulthood. These rituals were secret and were a part of the ?bangongo? society. They live in the southwest area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo stretching into Angola.
