Provenance Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia was a paternal aunt of Lord Mountbatten.
Notes The Princess Elizabeth was the daughter of Ludwig lV of Hesse and by Rhine and his wife Princess Alice, the daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In June 1884 she married The Grand Duke Sergei of Russia, the younger?son of Tsar?Alexander II (her younger?sister, the Tsarina, Alex was the wife of Nicholas ll). As a wedding present?her husband commissioned?the tiara she is wearing in the photograph from the court jeweller Bolin. It contained the famous Feodorovna?emeralds. After their marriage the Grand Duke, as Governor General of Moscow, lived in The Kremlin. He was assassinated in 1905 after which The Grand Duchess became a nun. She was murdered by the Bolsheviks at Ekaterinburg?in 1918 having been thrown down a mine and later canonised?by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1992 on account of her piety and good works.
