Description A Louis XVI style gilt-bronze and marble mounted mahogany display cabinet
third quarter 19th century
the shaped white marble top above a drawer and a glazed compartment with a drawer below, flanked with white marble columns, with open compartments to the sides, the serpentine base with a slide, four drawers and an under-tier, on turned fluted legs, with a paper label to the back printed 'Hodgson Bequest 39'

Condition Report In 'country house' condition. This cabinet is of unusual form. The elements which make it up show signs of age and wear. The marble is discolored and stained in places. Once of the marble columns has a repaired break. There are chips to some of the edges of the marble. The gilt brass with losses. Some mounts with original gilt-lacquer surface. Areas tarnished and discolored in the absence of this. There is lifting and lose elements to some of the mouldings, including a loose escutcheon. The mahogany with paint splatters, stained and discolored in places with age cracks and separation and localised losses to polish. The pull out writing slide split and the leather badly stained. Movement and separation to joins. Split to undertier. The piece has been fitted for electricity to illuminate the central cabinet which is also now fitted with a mirror. The piece will require re-wiring by a professional electrician. A compact and decorative piece that will benefit from some restoration.
