Description A George II carved?giltwood and gesso walnut mirror
circa 1740
with a bevelled rectangular plate, the frame with trailing foliage to the sides and a shaped apron, the reverse with paper label printed 'HODGSON BEQUEST 535', restoration
98cm. by 69cm.
Condition Report In country house condition. Losses to gesso, mouldings and carved detail. Remedial work in the past has been crude. There are areas of re-gilding, filler and glue. There are exposed areas of gesso and a section of lower edge to gilt slip replaced but also with losses. The reverse with loose boards, evidence of multiple fixing sites, fractures and repairs visble to leafy pendants. It is possible plate is old but has been re-silvered. Whilst the piece is tired it is of an attractive form and senstively restored will look fantastic.
