Notes The sitter was the son of The Earl of Altamont of?Westport House, Co Mayo. He was a member?of the Irish Parliament and later supported the Act of Union. In August 1800 he was made a member?of the Knights?of St. Patrick and created 1st Marquess of Sligo in the December. He was painted around that time by John Opie R.A. (engraved?by William Whiston Berney). His wife was Lady Louisa Catherine Howe (1767-1817), daughter of Admiral Lord Howe.
