Description Attributed Maurice Brazil Prendergast (1858 - 1924) American. Watercolor. Measure 9"in H x 6"in W and 15 1/2"in H x 12 1/2"in W with frame. Known for: Modernist genre-crowds, landscape and still life painting. Maurice Prendergast was born in Newfoundland, in 1858. His family moved to Boston when he was a boy, where he was apprenticed to a sign painter. Prendergast studied formally in Paris at the Academies Julian and Colarossi and returned to Massachusetts in 1894. His work caught the attention of patrons Mr. and Mrs. Sears, who helped him finance travels and exhibitions in Cincinnati and Chicago. While on a trip to Paris in 1907, Prendergast first saw the vibrant works of the Post-Impressionists who would strongly influence his work. His works are often bright and richly worked scenes of people at leisure.
