Qing DynastyThe vessel of hexagonal form tapering to a flaring foot, decorated on the body in shallow relief with a band depicting continuous designs of taotie masks framed by symmetrically confronted kui dragons, all reserved on leiwen grounds and separated by raised vertical flanges, the shoulders encircled with a similar band of archaistic designs. 61cm (21in) high.

清 仿古饕餮夔龍紋六方壺Provenance: an important European private collection來源:歐洲重要私人收藏Notable for its large proportion and the meticulous archaistic designs, the present vase belongs to a group of vessels inspired by celebrated ancient traditions while being firmly rooted in the modernity of the Qing dynasty. The Qing emperors proposed to 'restore ancient ways', referring to the view of ancient culture as having intrinsic qualities of sincerity, simplicity and happy exuberance. The Qianlong emperor, in particular, was fond of adapting archaic shapes into contemporary designs and instructed the court to collect drawings of antiquities, such as the 'Catalogue of Xiqing Antiquities' Xi Qing Gu Jian, which were provided to the craftsmen for inspiration; see Chang Li-tuan, The Refined Taste of the Emperor: Special Exhibition of Archaic and Pictorial Jades of the Ch'ing Court, Taipei, 1997, pp.49-50.Compare the shape of the present vase with a large hexagonal guan-type hu vase, Yongzheng mark and period, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum.
