ation d’un bodhisattva assis sur un lotus reposant sur un piédestal en attitude de délassement (maharajalilasana). Il fait geste de don de la main droite en tenant un fruit ou un joyau, et sa main gauche tient la tige d’un lotus qui s’épanouit au-dessus de son épaule en supportant une tête de makara. Le dosseret du tr?ne est ouvert, et un large nimbe se déploie autour de sa tête. La seule autre représentation d’un bodhisattva reprenant cette iconographie est sensiblement contemporaine de celle-ci. Il s’agit d’une sculpture de 15,24 cm découverte à Acutrajpur et conservée au Musée de Bhubaneshwar en Odisha, reproduite par Thomas E. Donaldson dans son ouvrage ? Iconography of the Buddhist Sculpture of Orissa ? Abhinav Publications, 2001 Vol.2 Fig 161. Il le classe parmi les bodhisattvas non identi?és, mais en étudiant des versions japonaises plus tardives du Vajradhatu-mandala, il met en évidence que le makara serait associé au bodhisattva Ragavajra (Jap. Ai.kong.) un des quatre ? vajra-bodhisattva ? constituant le premier cercle autour de Vajrasattva. Il serait décrit brandissant un fanion orné d’un makara. ? En tant que " diamant de l'amour ", il incarnerait l'attachement ou l'affection cupide qui, lorsqu'elle est vue avec l'?il de la connaissance, est identique à la compassion des buddhas et des bodhisattvas, la compassion étant la bodhicitta qui se manifeste par le désir d'aider et de libérer tous les êtres. ? Il considère donc comme possible, que compte tenu de la popularité du Vajradhatu-mandala en Odisha, que le bronze d'Acutrajpur puisse représenter Ragavajra (Aikongo), le texte sanskrit original avec son iconographie étant perdu. He is making a gesture of giving with his right hand while holding a fruit or a jewel, and his left hand is holding the stem of a lotus which is blooming above his shoulder while supporting a makara head. The backrest of the throne is open, and a large nimbus unfolds around his head. The only other representation of a bodhisattva using this iconography is more or less contemporary with this one. It is a 15.24 cm sculpture discovered in Acutrajpur and preserved in the Bhubaneshwar Museum in Odisha, reproduced by Thomas E. Donaldson in his book "Iconography of the Buddhist Sculpture of Orissa" Abhinav Publications, 2001 Vol.2 Fig 161. He classifies it among the unidentified bodhisattvas, but in studying later Japanese versions of the Vajradhatu-mandala, he points out that the makara would be associated with the bodhisattva Ragavajra (Jap. Ai.kong.) one of the four "vajra-bodhisattva" constituting the first circle around Vajrasattva. He is described as holding a pennant with a makara on it. "As the "diamond of love" he would embody attachment or greedy affection which, when seen with the eye of knowledge, is identical to the compassion of the buddhas and bodhisattvas, compassion being the bodhicitta which manifests itself in the desire to help and liberate all beings. "He therefore considers it possible, given the popularity of the Vajradhatu-mandala in Odisha, that the Acutrajpur bronze may represent Ragavajra (Aikongo), the original Sanskrit text with its iconography being lost. This work is accompanied by a thermoluminescence analysis of the core performed by QED Laboratory con?rming the dating as of November 8, 2012 . Provenance : - Collection privée Fran?aise.
