A Southern India Tamil Nadu copper alloy Shiva Sharabhesha with four arms and eight legs, in the shape of a bird-man-lion, based on the image of the mythical Sharaba, his upper hands holding parashu and mriga, his main hands disembowelling the prostrate Narasimha, Vishnu in his incarnation as man-lion, who is raising his hands in anjali mudra. Perspex base. Tamil Nadu. 15th century.
Shiva in composite shape takes revenge on Narasimha, who has disembowelled Shiva's admirer Hiranyakashipu, who on the other hand doubted the omnipotence of Vishnu. The representation stands for the rivalry of Shiva and Vishnu followers.
