Porcelain covered jar decorated in wucai "five-color" enamels, China, Transitional period, Shunzhi, ca. 1645-1660Continuously decorated in blue underglaze and green, red, yellow and eggplant enamels overglaze with a scene showing Chang'e, 嫦娥, the moon goddess, holding an osmanthus flower, standing on the terrace of her Moon Palace, 广寒宫, with four maids holding a fan, a qin and the moon rabbit 月兔 by her side. Separated by stylized rocks and plants are depicted the Xuanzong emperor 唐玄宗, flanked by Taoist magicians in clouds, then two celestial women, a white crane at their side. The neck is decorated with pomegranates, peaches and rocks, the lid with two women and a man. The European grip in gilded copper alloy surmounted by a seated lion. The unglazed bottom. Height : 44 cm
This decoration is inspired by a legend according to which the Tang emperor Xuanzong (810-859) was invited by a Taoist master to an "initiatory journey to the moon"
