Pair of portraits of ancestors, ink and polychrome on paper, representing a mandarin of the second rank and his wife, China, Daoguang period, 1821-1850The man is wearing the Qing Guanmao, the official headdress, his winter model. Dressed in a chaofu robe decorated with four-clawed dragons under a black bufu-type court coat with a ceremonial piling collar and a badge defining his rank. Seated on a chair probably covered with embroidered fabric, jiaoyi type recognizable by its metal frames and footrest. His wife is wearing the fengguan, or phoenix crown, and a green robe with qun pleats under a similar cloak decorated with the same badge as her husband. A calligraphic text is located above each of the paintings. It shows a zodiacal cyclic date: year xinsi - 辛巳 of the new year of the Daoguang era (i.e. 1821).
