GROLLIER de SERVIERE (J.).
Collection of curious works of mathematics and mechanics or description of the cabinet of Mr. Grollier de Servière. Second edition revised, corrected and increased with new machines and several plates. Lyon, D. Ferey, 1733; in-4, contemporary binding in basane jaspée, spine decorated, red edges.
Rare and curious book, illustrated with 93 plates out of text engraved by Daudet.
These plates represent masterpieces of turning, curious clocks and numerous mechanical machines with pulleys or other gears: water lifting machines, windmills, paddle machines for the propulsion of boats, machines of ballistics and military art, etc.
This remarkable mechanical collection was assembled at the end of the seventeenth century by the author's grandfather, Nicolas Grollier de Servière, a retired lieutenant-colonel. His cabinet was sufficiently famous that Louis XIV wanted to visit it while passing through Lyon.
The Grollier de Servière family were descendants of the famous bibliophile Jean Grollier.
Beautiful copy in old binding.
