A pair of George III neo-classical silver candlesticks by Matthew Boulton & John Fothergill, Birmingham, 1773, after a design by James Wyatt, (1746-1813), a rival of Robert Adam, the slender baluster columns with acanthus leaf decoration below drapery swags, with flared fluting to top and bottom of columns, the square bases with incurved sides, cut corners, edges chased with guilloche bands and rosettes at each corner, the capitals chased with stiff acanthus leaves, detachable fluted nozzles with petalled edges, filled wood bases, engraved with a coronet above a crest coronet, 29.5 cm. high. The crest coronet is shared by 29 families including Baron & Earl Howe (from 1788), Earl & Viscount Waldegrave and Waldegrave, Baron Radstock (from 1800). It is possible that the unconventional 7-ball coronet above the crest coronet was added later to what was already a family piece to mark an elevation in status/title but the engraver made a mistake in the number of balls depicted.
Overall good condition but some small splits/holes have worn through on petalled edges of fluting of bases and in the fluting itself, one detachable nozzle is marked with makers' mark and lion passant, the other is unmarked and may be due to the cheneer of nozzle being replaced due to damage, sticks are marked along bottom edge of foot rim, slight wear to crests.
