Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Self Portrait, Oil on canvas. Dimension: 23-1/8" x 20"; OD: 30" x 26-3/8" Provenance: This piece was owned by a Virginia antique dealer in the Mid 20th C. The owner had kept this magnificent painting as a prized possession with no intentions of selling it. From unforeseen circumstances beyond the control of the aging nonagenarian the roof, developed leaks creating irreparable damage to the structure and items that were stored inside. With the building being damaged and condemned the owner was left with few choices on what to do with the treasured contents, including this treasured painting believed to be from the artist Peter Paul Rubens. The painting in the process had received damage loosing paint on the outer edges. A group of investors appreciative of the finer arts purchased the painting in the early 1980’s and brought it to a gallery in Georgia that is known for their professional restoration capabilities. The investors misrepresented the piece as a painting being from Rembrandt. The Gallery performed an inspection on the canvas while a sample of the paint was examined by University of West Georgia of Carrolton, using the proper means and equipment it was determined that the painting was indeed from the correct time period but was thought to be from the artist Peter Paul Ruben instead of Rembrandt. The research using x-ray technology determined that the painting had restoration 3 or more times in it’s history. (Please refer to attached X ray photograph on the listing). With this information the investors agreed that it would be in their best interest to sell the painting to the gallery. It is known from historical archives that many of the paintings created by Peter Paul Rubens were never signed by the artist, however with a very high degree of certainty from the professional galleries this indeed believed to be authentic. LOT NOTES:
Sir Peter Paul Rubens; 28 June 1577 – 30 May 1640) was a Flemish/Netherlandish draughtsman and painter. He is widely considered as the most notable artist of Flemish Baroque art school. A proponent of an extravagant Baroque style that emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, Rubens is well known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. In addition to running a large studio in Antwerp that produced paintings popular with nobility and art collectors throughout Europe, Rubens was a classically educated humanist scholar and diplomat who was knighted by both Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England. Rubens was a prolific artist. The catalogue of his works by Michael Jaffé lists 1,403 pieces, excluding numerous copies made in his workshop. His commissioned works were mostly "history paintings", which included religious and mythological subjects, and hunt scenes. He painted portraits, especially of friends, and self-portraits, and in later life painted several landscapes. Rubens designed tapestries and prints, as well as his own house. He also oversaw the ephemeral decorations of the royal entry into Antwerp by the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand in 1635. His drawings are mostly extremely forceful but not overly detailed. He also made great use of oil sketches as preparatory studies. He was one of the last major artists to make consistent use of wooden panels as a support medium, even for very large works, but he used canvas as well, especially when the work needed to be sent a long distance. For altarpieces he sometimes painted on slate to reduce reflection problems. Rubens died from heart failure, which was a result of his chronic gout on 30 May 1640. He was interred in Saint James' church, Antwerp. He was burried with his family: Frans Rubens : Schepen of Antwerp in 1659, marr. Suzanne Charles, Alexander Josephus Rubens and Catherina Philipine de Parys, Philip Constant de Parys, Count of Merxem, died 1689; Alexander Jacob de Parys, Joannes Baptist de Parys, Isabella Alexandrine de Parys and Frans Frederic, Count of Respani, died 1759; Albert I Rubens, (1614-1657) and his wife Clara del Monte.
