拍品描述 翻译
The elephant Ming Dynasty, the mounts 18th century
The charmingly-wrinkled beast standing foursquare with almond-shaped eyes above a curling trunk between long pointed tusks and lotus-leaf ears, the wrinkles carved to resemble folds of skin, the stone of pale green-grey tone, caparisoned with gilt bronze saddle-cloth with designs of lotus inlaid with turquoise, surmounted by a vase with a pricket, flanked by a pair of ribbons, stand. 22.5cm (8 7/8in) high. (2). 明 青玉瑞象 鑲配十八世紀鎏金銅嵌寳鞍韉及寶瓶
Provenance: a Paris private collection
來源:巴黎私人收藏
The 'vase' (ping 瓶) which puns with 'peace' (ping 平), and elephant (xiang 象) which also means 'sign' or 'portent', forms a rebus for the phrase taiping youxiang (太平有象), meaning 'Where there is peace, there is an omen (or elephant)'. See also a Court painting dating to the Qianlong reign, 'Ten Thousand Envoys Come to Pay Tribute' depicts an elephant carrying a vase as part of a tribute procession, illustrated by C.Ho and B.Bronson, Splendors of China's Forbidden City: The Glorious Reign of Emperor Qianlong , London, 2004, pls.80-82.
The elephant is one of the auspicious symbols of Buddhism - an attribute of royalty, associated with Puxian, the Bodhisattva of Universal Benevolence, and the personification of Perfect Activity and Happiness, who is often shown seated on a white elephant. The elephant also symbolises the tamed and strong mind of the Buddhist practitioner.
Pairs of caparisoned elephants were often displayed in the halls of the Imperial palace, see examples displayed in the Yangxin dian, illustrated in Palaces of the Forbidden City , Hong Kong, 1986, pls.78 and 79. See also a very similar pair of similarly-caparisoned jade elephants in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Palace Museum Collection: A Treasury of Ming and Qing Dynasty Furniture , vol.II, Beijing, 2007, fig.782, and in-situ on the cover illustration, and another example in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Classics of the Forbidden City: Life in the Forbidden City in Qing Dynasty , Beijing, 2007, fig. 216.
