This marvelous character study of a sophisticated, elegantly-dressed woman nestled in the corner of a Parisian café near a samovar is one of the most ambitious early figurative paintings by the American painter, Jane Peterson. Measuring a commanding 50 x 30 inches, the painting is likely something Peterson chose to exhibit in one of her earliest shows in Paris and Boston (c. 1909). Although best known today for her sunny floral and garden views as well as her colorful scenes of Gloucester, Peterson devoted considerable energy and focus during her formative European years to painting genre scene-cum-portraits of single women in a bustling urban world. Without stretching the idea too far, it is quite accurate to note that her artistic focus was trained sharply for time on images featuring the type of woman she herself aspired to become-independent and in charge of her own life and world in an environment of culture.
From the time she was a young girl growing up in Elgin, Illinois, Jessie Christine Peterson (who changed her name to Jane in 1909), daughter of a homemaker mother and a father who worked at the Elgin Watch Company, wanted to be an artist. Although she was raised with no formal art training, she set about to rectify that situation as quickly as possible, and in an amazingly short period of time, set her sights on getting a first-rate artistic education. Once she learned about the Pratt Institute in New York, she decided to enroll there to train with Arthur Wesley Dow (1857-1922), who encouraged a goal of harmonious interpretation of nature rather than as lavish copy. After graduation from Pratt in 1901, Peterson continued her education with American Impressionist Henry Snell and academician Frank DuMond. Beginning in 1907, and like many artists of her time, Peterson took several grand tours of the European countries, and furthered her education with several notable figures: English Art Nouveau watercolorist Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956), Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla (1909-10), and in Paris with Jacques-Emile Blanche (1861-1942), the celebrated society portraitist. She became friendly with Gertrude and Leo Stein, and met Picasso and Matisse as a regular at their Salons.
In 1910, Peterson travelled alone to Egypt and Algiers in North Africa - an extremely bold act for a woman in the early 20th century. Over the course of her long and productive career, Peterson evolved as an artist, experimenting with a variety of styles as her vision matured and her tastes changed. She enjoyed a steady clientele for her work in the United States, traveled when and where she wanted in pursuit of inspiration for her paintings, and did not marry until the age of 50 after she had already established her career.
