The water buffalo is carved following the pebble form with its legs tucked beneath and its tail flicked on its haunches. The stone is of a creamy tone with grey veins. The Buddhist lion is carved recumbent with his head facing backwards, its feet tucked beneath it. The stone is of a celadon green tone with russet veins. With a wood stand. Both pieces are pierced for suspension.
Catalogue notes: The water buffalo, also called ox, features heavily in Chinese mythology, including its role as one of the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and in the well-known traditional romantic myth of the 'Ox Herd and Weaver Girl'.
Condition: the creamy jade buffalo with a small nick to the back leg (approx. 0.5 cm. long); the celadon jade Buddhist lion with natural flaw lines to the stone.
