, 19th century, Japan, A birds eye view of the settlement on the island of Decima in the Bay of Nagasaki where the Dutch held a trading post between 1641 until 1854. During that period the Dutch were the only Western power to be allowed to trade with the Japanese. This impressively large, very detailed and colourful 3D relief diorama of composite materials on a wood backing is framed behind glass in a lacquer frame with mother of pearl inlay. At least one other near identical example is known (present whereabouts unknown). 116,5 x 85 cm (7,5 cm deep), Nice original condition. Two cracks in the wood backing (caused by time and natural aging of the wood) are visible in the sky in the left half. Small faults and general wear from age. No restoration.
