Description:A Chinese orange ground robe dating from the 18th to early 19th century. The robe is embroidered with a tiger, dragon, and cranes on the front, and a dragon and 5 archaic characters with bagua on the back. Dimensions are: 47 inches tall X 56 inches wide, 119.38 cm X 146.24 cm. All measurements are approximate.

Kesi silk was popular during Ming and Qing dynasty, due to its versatility and its great potential when being used on tapestry. During Qianlong period, embroidery techniques using Kesi silk had become mature, and Kesi silk products were elegant and delicate. At the time, Kesi silk was crafted into ornament appearing on most of the silk products within the royal palace. On the front, the collar of the robe is decorated with a dragon and a tiger, both of which have significant symbolic meaning in Taoism. On the hem there is a symmetric pair of embroidered cranes spreading their wings and ready to fly. The back of the robe is finely embroidered on with various ornaments. Near the neckline, there is a moon rabbit and ri wu, which symbolize the sun and the moon. At the middle, there is a pair of dragons holding a pagoda. The dragons are surrounded by several golden dots, with the names of the Five Sacred Mountains and the character Shou embroidered in between the dots. Surrounding the dots, there are five dragon emblems and the divine instruments of the Eight Immortals. The sleeves are decorated with a combined pattern of bagua, flora and bats. The ornaments are auspicious and strongly Tao themed. There are three types of Taoist robes, each for a different rank: the Jiang robe, the Tao robe and the Haiqing robe. Among them, the Jiang robe symbolizes the highest rank status and has the most sophisticated embroidery, and is worn by the Taoist priests with higher status during important ceremonies. Typical patterns shown on a Jiang robe are pagodas, spirit beasts, and bagua. Judging from the patterns and the level of exquisiteness, this robe should be a Jiang robe. A similar priest's robe can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1937.797. A similar blue ground priest's robe was sold at Beijing Poly International Auction Co. as lot 2094 in November 3, 2009.
