Isaac Isra?ls oeuvre primarily features motifs from his travels to Paris and London, where he drew inspiration from the bustling activity in the parks, cafés, cabarets and streets. Yet it is Isra?ls Indonesian paintings that reveal a special fascination of the artist. They can be more or less divided into two different periods. The first comprises the works with Indonesian motifs painted in The Hague and the second, with Indonesian subjects painted in the Dutch Indies. He first encountered representations of Javanese dancers in the "Nationale Tentoonstelling van Vrouwenarbeid" held in The Hague in 1898 in honour of the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina. This fascination was to endure nearly twenty years until December 1921, when he travelled to Java and Bali for ten months. The most notable difference between the two creative periods is in the rendering of light and colour. While the first phase is oriented towards subdued light and the colour palette of the Hague School, the works of the Dutch Indies period depict subjects in outdoor settings and bright daylight. This is also seen in the present painting, with its palpable serenity and tranquil beauty emanating from the portrayed Balinese woman. With illuminating brightness and a warm colour palette, Isaac Isra?ls presents himself as an Impressionist and clearly separates himself from the works created in a muted palette under the influence of the Hague School.
