(Stampa 1902–1985 Paris) Table à Tête de chien, dite Table de chasseur. 1983/84. Bronze, green patina. Signed and monogrammed on a stretcher: DIEGO DG. 38 × 44.5 × 53.5 cm. Provenance: Private collection Luxembourg, acquired directly from the artist in his studio in 1983/84. Literature: cf. Daniel Marchesseau, Diego Giacometti, Paris 1986, p. 58 (related example). Among the diverse oeuvre of the Swiss sculptor and designer Diego Giacometti, his works dealing with animals stand out in particular. Each intended as a custom piece for his clients, sometimes with minimal alterations, his works’ complexity and expressiveness show the strong influence of his brother Alberto, to whom he was the closest assistant. Known as "hunting tables", these pieces of furniture are held together by struts running through the central axis that resemble antlers and lend the tabletop an elegant framing. The dog heads mounted at the corners of the table accentuate the vertical legs and provide them with a whimsical conclusion. In the now outdated discourse concerning "high" arts and "low" crafts, this example demonstrates the artistic and intellectual quality that Giacometti incorporated into his work. The age of this bronze, with its green patina, appears lighter than originally produced and imparts the table with a further sense of airiness. His humility in devoting himself to everyday objects, in contrast to his pioneering brother, reveals a quality that particularly brings the playful and humorous aspects of his work to the fore. During the studio visit in 1983/84, a handful of photos were taken showing Diegos studio. The present table can be seen in two of these photos (cf. ill. 1 and 2). In the foreground and background are the chandeliers that are now in the Musée Picasso in Paris. DIEGO GIACOMETTI (Stampa 1902–1985 Paris) Table à Tête de chien, dite Table de chasseur. 1983/84.
