Born in Lausanne in 1983, the artist Claudia Comte is known above all for her exuberant, site-specific installations and wooden sculptures. Concrete art, Op or Pop Art, as well as comics and popular culture are among her sources of inspiration at the same time, the craft aspect plays a central role in her work. It is not uncommon for her to take up the saw, to mill, polish or grind the materials she chooses, from which playful grids, systems and patterns of geometric brilliance emerge. From her studio in Berlin, she works on exhibitions and installations that have been shown in Paris, Toulouse, New York, Palm Springs or at Art Miami, among other places in 2014, she received the Swiss Art Award, and, in 2017, the Museum of Art Lucerne presented her first large survey exhibition on an area of more than 1,000 square metres — a considerable and sophisticated ?uvre for an artist of 39 years of age. Her works show fragmentary echoes of Vasarely or Bridget Riley, but Comte is not content to quote her predecessors. Her boundless creativity and craftsmanship come together in newly conceived images. Comte humorously upends the constructs of Modernism, as the extensive show in Lucerne illustrates: her elaborately choreographed exhibition presents the viewer with walls painted in black and white, with sausages and cheese depicted in comic-strip format, a cactus forest made from trees from the Jura, which she herself worked using a chainsaw, marble donuts of various sizes, as well as a multitude of geometric-abstract woodcuts of every colour on the spectrum. The present series “Basic & Combinations” was created during LISTE18, in which Claudia Comte participated as a special guest. Every day a new woodcut was produced, cut into MDF with a chainsaw. The Basics & Combinations Edition is based on 6 plates, all printed during LISTE18. The Combinations comprise 6 variations with two basic colours, as well as 6 variations with three basic colours. In addition, the Basics series comprises 6 sheets in monochrome colours (yellow, orange, green, pink, violet and blue). By bringing together the geometric and the organic, Comte has created a return to childhood memories, which greatly inform her relationship to wood as a material, growing up as she did in a chalet in the countryside. Saturated colours in geometric grids, lozenges and zig-zag patterns also skilfully showcase the playful element of Comtes work in this series. Comte studied at the école Cantonale dArt de Lausanne, followed by a Master of Art in Science of Education at the Haute Ecole Pédagogique, Visual Arts, Lausanne. The artists practice is based on a distinct system of rules and measurement that she has created herself, in which all the artworks are specifically related to one another. In 2018, she was awarded the Irène Reymond Foundation Prize and the Cultural Promotion Prize of the Alexander Clavel Foundation. In 2017, the Museum of Art Lucerne presented a comprehensive survey exhibition of Comtes work, and in 2022 her work will be included in the exhibition "Geometric Opulence" at Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich. The artist lives and works in Berlin. CLAUDIA COMTE (Grancy 1983–lebt und arbeitet u.a. in Lausanne) Basic and Combinations. 2013.
