Dr. Robert I-San Lin's Collection of Important Chinese Artworks A rare Yongzheng period and marked sky-blue rectangular narcissus bowl. This rectangular bowl has a white, very fine, and heavy body, made of a high density clay that is typical for late Kangxi to Yongzheng imperial porcelains. The sky blue-glaze is waxy and thick, and lacks the glassy glare of imitation Yongzheng porcelains. The glaze has some black dots and many minute pores of burst bubbles; these are typical for many early Qing porcelains. The artist has painted the sky-blue glaze with white or bluish white streaks and patches, mimicking the flowing clouds in an early evening blue sky. The bowl was fired with support of eight evenly located spurs, leaving the spur marks on the outer base. This was necessary to prevent the heavy and flat base from buckling under intense kiln fire, a typical technique employed by some early Qing and prior porcelain artists. The Yongzheng mark is at the center of the outer base; this mark is typical for the imperial marks of Yongzheng, with well-written strokes and in intense underglaze blue, which becomes blackish blue under the sky-blue glaze. There are two major types of sky-blue glaze. The 10th century's Later Zhou made sky-blue glaze under the imperial command that the imperial porcelains to have the blue of the sky just after the burst of clouds at end of a storm. Another, cobalt-based pale blue glaze, started to appear during Kangxi, to which this basin belongs. Kangxi sky-blue porcelains are small and high quality imperial wares. During Yongzheng larger wares were produced. Sky-blue porcelains are loved and treasured throughout the history, because the mellowed and pale grayish blue brings spiritual comfort and/or mysterious imaginations to many people. This basin with a combination of the grayish white streaks and patches with mellowed sky-blue is indeed a lovely treasure to have. H7.4 cm, dia 15.1 cm, weight 249.2 g. (Collection of Dr. Robert I-San Lin of California).
