Dr. Lin 4192. A magnificent and rare Daoguang period and marked globular jar. It depicts five dragons playing among clouds in polychrome and on a delicately engraved Zha Dao ground. This jar’s globular body is typical of some high quality jars of Daoguang period and also resembles the spherical jars of Tang dynasty more than a millennium ago. Most Chinese porcelains jars since Tang have elongated or column-like shapes. The thin body is made of the finest clay of Daoguang period. The transparent glaze is clear and reveals the very light ivory-white body beneath, which is different from later imitations that usually have a pure, titanium oxide powder-like or bleached starch powder-like white color. The base and the foot are well cut. Both inner and outer clay body-glaze interface lines are neatly cut, so that there is stepping down from the glaze to the clay body. Such fine foot cutting work was common for the choicest porcelains of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong periods, but uncommon during late Qing period. Before applying the glaze and firing, a brown coating was applied onto the clay body around the foot. The remnant of the coating is visible as brown circles between the glaze and clay body around the foot rim. This coating technique was used on many quality Song porcelains, but is rare during Qing dynasty. The transparent glaze on the outer base and inner wall is unctuous and has a little celadon tinge; whereas the glaze on the outer wall is ivory-white and not as smooth due to Zha Dao engravings that cover most of the surface. Zha Dao is a very labor-intensive decoration invented during late Yongzheng-early Qianlong period and requires the artist to use a very fine needle to engrave numerous minute curving patterns on the glaze before putting on decorative enamels and firing. Many of these patterns look like an interconnected feather-like or tree branch-like network. Zha Dao ground are normally made on a small number of top quality imperial porcelains. The dragons are painted in brilliant multi-color enamels in great detail. For example, a blue dragon has scales in cloisonné enamel-blue that rises above the ground; green eyes; pink mane and dorsal fin, white teeth, and red tongue and underarm area. A green dragon has dark green body with black scales; pink face, horns and belly scales; light green mane; and red dorsal fin, tail spurs, and underarm areas. The clouds show multilayer and are also painted in multicolor, e.g., pink, green, yellow, and purple. In addition, red flames scatter over the sky. The decorations as a whole present an animated and colorful world of the heavenly beasts that represent the emperor. A band of yellow ru yi clouds decorate the space just beneath the evert lip, yellow being an imperial color. A blue trident band decorates the shoulder, above a broad band of interconnecting flowers in a light green ground. This band is surrounded on both side by double red lines sandwiching a lightly gilded line. A broad band of white and green waves decorates the wall near the foot. (From Dr. Robert I-San Lin’s Collection of Important Chinese Arts, California)
