Herter Brothers. W H Vanderbilt House, 640 Fifth Avenue Drawing Room Side Chair. Upholstry and fringe changed circa 1989 keeping much of the old padding. Chalk inscription to back of chair under padding: "Mr. Vanderbilt's Drawing Room". Height to top of back 29 1/2 inches (75 cm.) X width front foot to front foot 21 1/4 inches (54 cm.) X Depth front foot to back foot 21 3/4 inches (55.5 cm.). Provenance: Acquired in the late 1980's from a Vanderbilt Family member. Illustrated: Artistic Houses, New York, 1883-1884 Volume 1 part 2, "Mr W H Vanderbilt's Drawing-room" and again on page 201 of Herter Brothers Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, 1994 where it appears to be the only chair in this design without arms in the room.
