Note :
Arbre dans le vent ou Avant l’orage est une œuvre de la série des « Arbres », traitée à la façon des paysages expressionnistes que Chaïm Soutine exécute dès 1920.
Toute sa vie, l’artiste a prouvé sa prédilection pour ce sujet.
Agités violemment en tous sens jusqu’à donner parfois l’impression d’avoir perdu l axe propre, les arbres dans le vent semblent refléter une forme d’angoisse.
Les troncs prennent des allures anthropomorphiques pouvant faire penser que le peintre y projette une image de lui-même.
Par la suite, le motif s’individualise, à Vence déjà, puis à Chartres et en Touraine : les arbres, gigantesques, isolés, occupent désormais toute la toile, sur un fond réduit parfois au ciel. Ils se redressent pour atteindre à « une sorte de sérénité douloureuse»,
exprimant peut-être les interrogations du peintre sur « le cycle mouvementé de la vie ».
Les paysages redeviennent tourbillonnants, du fait des branches et des feuillages balayés par le vent - que Soutine, peintre du mouvement, rend réellement visible : mais les arbres y sont désormais bien enracinés.
Vers la fin de cette série, l’artiste fait réapparaitre des personnages, suggérant la place retrouvée de l’homme au sein de la nature.
Nous pouvons dater cette série précise vers la fin des années 1930.
C’est sans doute durant ses séjours en Touraine ou à Chartres, lorsque les Castaing accueillaient souvent l’artiste dans l propriété de Lèves, qu’il fut inspiré pour le sujet de cette peinture Arbre dans le vent ou Avant l’orage.

The highest and last bidder will be the purchaser.
