China. 19th century. The impressive service decorated with bunches of flowers, fruit, and insects encircled by flying dragons and various precious objects. Made up of a 16″ punch bowl, 19″ well and tree platter (small chip to foot), 18″ platter with strainer (small chip to rim), 15″ charger, 18-1/2″ platter, set of six nesting platters from 18-1/2″ w to 12-1/2″ w (one platter broken and restored), two 14″ l x 10-1/2″ h covered tureens with under-plates, two 9-1/2″ w covered bowls, two 10-3/4″ covered vegetable dishes, three 8″ l x 5-1/2″ h covered sauce tureens, two with under-plates (the handle of one tureen missing), 10-1/4″ shrimp dish (large chip to handle), 9-1/2″ h covered coffee pot, 7-1/2″ covered tea pot, 5″ h covered sugar bowl with under-plate (chip to cover), 5-1/2″ cream jug, 9″ w x 5″ h pedestal dish, 8-1/2″ pedestal dish (chip and hairline). Also included are thirty-six 9-3/4″ plates, nineteen 8-1/2″ plates, 12 egg cups, five 4″ w coffee cups, seven 3-3/4″ tea cups, 15 demitasse cups, twelve 4″ saucers, eight 5-1/2″ saucers, eleven 6″ saucers, and one 7-1/2″ round server. PROVENANCE: By descent thru the family of William Gano Pierce (1825 – 1875) who sailed from New York on board the Samuel Russell under Captain T. D. Palmer to Hong Kong, arriving June 15th, 1849. He remained in China for eight years. By direct descent through the family to the current owner. CONDITION: Serving pieces noted above. Some of the plates, cups and saucers with chips and/or hairlines. Overall very good.
