A CHINESE BLUE GROUND SILK BROCADE NINE DRAGON ROBE, CIRCA 1900. Woven with nine five-clawed dragons (a hidden ninth dragon chasing a flaming pearl to the right thigh) before flaming pearls amongst clouds, dragons and Buddhist emblems above waves and lishui stripes, with brown and ivory striped sleeves edged with dragons and emblems, with gold thread and gilt toggles. 141cm long. Provenance: Property of Dr.G.W.Milledge acquired during his time in China c.1930s, thence by descent.
Overall in good order, the colours are bright and the embroidery in good order. Gilt thread slightly loose at collar and sleeves, minor repair to blue silk at back at neck, small tear under one arm, short tears and old repairs to edge of front and back at split, some discolouration and wear to blue silk sleeve, some very minor loose threads and wear.
