20TH CENTURY. The first pleated, edged with blue and black panels, embroidered with coloured silk flowers, butterflies, scrollwork and bats. 94cm long, the pink example with chrysanthemum and scrolling leaves, partly pleated with black panels, embroidered with loose flower-sprays, the black and brown silk hem with blue insects, leaves and flower heads. 97.5cm long. Provenance: Property of Dr.G.W.Milledge acquired during his time in China c.1930s, thence by descent. The yellow example: some patches of fading to yellow damask silk, brown discolouring to cotton waistband, some typical wear and minor loose threads. The embroidery is bright and in good order overall. The skirt has been cut down and the length of the waistband suggests that around 2/3rd of the skirt is lacking. Some pale brown discolouration to waistband and to pink silk, fraying at edges of pink silk, some associated loose threads.
