Chang Fo-chuan, a significant theorist of Liberalism in China, was born in Baodi County, Hebei Province. He received his undergraduate education at Yenching University, following which he pursued advanced studies at John Hopkins University. Upon his return to China, Chang went on to teach at National South-West Associated University and Yenching University.

In 1932, the renowned Chinese philosopher and scholar Hu Shih founded Duli Pinglun (The Independent Critique), a leading journal advocating for democratic reforms and intellectual freedom. Two years later, in 1934, Hu Shih was appointed as the director of the School of Liberal Arts at Peking University. In the same year, Hu Shih invited Chang Fo-chuan to contribute as a major writer for the journal and to teach political science at Peking University.

In 1948, Chang Fo-chuan had plans to move to the south and made his first visit to Taipei, as evidenced by the two business cards in the present lot. The following year, Hu Shih flew to Taipei from San Francisco and founded a new journal called Ziyou Zhongguo (Freedom China). He then invited Chang Fo-chuan, who had settled down in Taipei, to contribute to the journal. In 1954, Chang Fo-chuan published his most significant monograph Ziyou yu Renquan (Freedom and Human Right) and became the director of the Political Science Department at Soochow University until 1956.

During 1956-1961, Chang Fo-chuan served as the director of the Political Science Department and the dean of the Liberal Arts Department at Tunghai University in Taichung. Meanwhile, in 1957, Hu Shih was nominated by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) the president of Academia Sinica. The next year, Hu Shih delivered a speech at Tunghai University. The two letters in the present lot were written in the subsequent two years. Both envelopes bear the printed letterhead of "Academia Sinica," and one of them with Hu Shih's printed name.

The contents of the two letters are interrelated. The short one, written in 1959, mentions that Chang Fo-chuan discussed studying abroad with Hu Shih and Mei Yiqi (1889-1962), the former president of Tsinghua University and then-Minister of Education of the Republic of China. According to the second letter, Chang Fo-chuan planned to study at Harvard, but was concerned about the expense. Hu Shih suggested that he cut costs by traveling alone, without his wife, and humorously pointed out that in doing so, Chang Fo-chuan could regain the ability to take care of himself.
