Gilt Lacquer Bronze Figure of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara - China, late Ming Period, 16th / 17th century, the crowned bejewelled Bodhisattva shown sitting in padmasana on double lotus thron, wearing loose robes open at the chest, draped with a shawl the border of which falls to the edge of the base, adorned with elaborate jewelry necklaces, the broad face with gentle nearly serene downcast expression, flanked by elongated earlobes, the right hand performs a kind of karana-mudra (Karana mudra is the gesture of warding off evil), the left is resting in avakasa-mudra in his lap (a ''half-dhyana-mudra corresponding hand gesture''), he is also holding the stalks of the lotuses whose blossoms extend above his shoulders in both of his hands, open base, H.c.25cm, weight c. 2660g, signs of age, the figure has significant losses to the gilt and red lacquer and shows minor oxidation to the metal
