Expert opinions: Handwritten expertise (in German) by Dr. Paul Wescher (1896-1974): "I consider the painting of a young lady with Cupid in the background to be a characteristic and flawless work by the English court painter Peter Lely, who after van Dyck was the preferred portraitist of English society." Alastair Lang wrote in an e-mail in 2012: "I think that the portrait of a lady in blue at a putto-fountain most probably is by Lely - an early picture of around 1650. ...There is just a possibility that the portrait could be by Lely's early rival, Weesop (about whom very little is known)." Weesop is John WEESOP (active 1641-1649).
