In basso a sinistra, sul foglio di supporto, la scritta con inchiostro seppia “Battagioli maestro Canaletto”. Ottimo stato di conservazione.

Bella veduta con spettacolari effetti di chiaroscuro, che richiama le celebri incisioni di Francesco Bellotto, detto il Canaletto. Francesco Battaglioli, Modena, 1725 - Venezia, 1796, fu artista apprezzato dai contemporanei: risulta presente a Venezia, che divenne di fatto la sua patria d'adozione, dal 1747 al 1751, periodo in cui il suo nome compare nella Fraglia dei pittori. Nel 1754 fu chiamato a Madrid alla corte di Ferdinando IV, per il quale dipinse le Vedute dei Palazzi Reali di Aranjuez e Madrid. Alla corte spagnola intesse un rapporto di collaborazione con Farinelli e Metastasio, realizzando le scenografie per numerose rappresentazioni melodrammatiche. Rientrò a Venezia nel 1759 e, entrato a far parte dell’Accademia di Belle Arti, nel 1778 succedette al Visentini sulla cattedra di prospettiva.
