Chinese Yuan Dynasty bottle vase, finely potted in a traditional YuHuChun shape vessel, 'the pear shaped' bottle vase, a bottom-heavy body tapered gracefully to slender waisted neck flaring at the rim, supported on short spreading foot ring. Painted in various tones and shades of cobalt-blue with The Three Friends of Winter, also known as Suihan Sanyou (or shochikubai), symbolize the pine, bamboo, and plum. The glaze stopping before the foot rim, revealed the pale-creme ground, with orange and grayish firing marks. The receded central under base remain white underglaze with firing flaw mark. The pear vase elegantly presented upon a carved hardwood stand, displayed inside a wooden framed glass box upon a metallic-yellow silk covered pedestal, and bordered with attractive patterned red ribbon. The Chinese observed that the pine, bamboo and plum do not wither as the cold days deepen into the winter season unlike many other plants. Known by them as the Three Friends of Winter, they entered the conventions of East Asian culture. Together they symbolize steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. They are highly regarded in Confucianism and as such represent the scholar-gentleman's ideal.
