Description

The Great Oak Screen of 1558 from Hardye's Grammar School of Dorchester, Tracing its origins to the early 16th century, the Thomas Hardye School, Dorchester, is a testament to the enduring pursuit of knowledge and the dedication to educational excellence. Named after Thomas Hardye, a local merchant and philanthropist, the school's journey through time reflects the evolution of educational ideals and the impact of individuals on the growth of a community. Originally established by wealthy townsmen Luke Adyn and William Churchill in 1567, when educational opportunities were limited, and learning was often restricted to the privileged few, in 1569, a charitable trust was established by Thomas Hardye, who bequeathed funds to establish a grammar school in Dorchester. His vision was to provide accessible education to the local youth, empowering them with the tools for a brighter future. The present lot, a grand oak screen, has led an extraordinary life, having first been recovered from a Spanish ship wrecked on the Dorset coast when Drake defeated the Armada in 1588 and, later, in 1613, surviving the Great Fire of Dorchester which devastated the tinder-dry town, and with it, the school. Installed by School Master Robert Cheeke (1572-1627) - who was widely celebrated as the school’s greatest benefactor due to his extensive rebuilding, at his own expense, of the school following the fire - the screen originally was originally erected in the South Street ‘Nappers Mite’ site, before being relocated to the Library of the Culliford Road site in 1928. Later, the screen was once again moved to the present site of the school, Queen’s Avenue, where it was displayed in the school’s theatre auditorium. Following refurbishment, in 2021 the screen was finally removed from the school. approx 450 x 606cm
