Provenance: Sir Thomas Jackson, 1st Baronet (1841-1915), and thence by descent to his niece Mary Menary, wife of James Wright who purchased Gilford Castle in County Down, Northern Ireland, from where the collection comes from.
Sir Thomas Jackson (昃臣) was the third Chief Manager of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and known as the bank's 'Great Architect', as well as one of the founding members of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. He was born in County Leitrim, Ireland. Jackson joined the Belfast branch of the Bank of Ireland at the age of 19 before accepting a position in Hong Kong in 1860 with Agra and Masterbank. In 1865, he joined HSBC, which had only been established in 1864. He first worked for HSBC as an accountant in Shanghai, and later spent several years in Japan as the manager of the Yokohama branch. At the early age of 35, he was appointed as Chief Manager of HSBC, and under his business leadership the bank became the premiere bank in Asia. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1891, taking charge of the company's office in London. He was knighted in 1899 and three years later in 1902 he received the title of Baronet. In 1906, a statue of Sir Thomas Jackson was unveiled in Statue Square in front of HSBC in Hong Kong, in recognition of his services to HSBC and Hong Kong, where Jackson Road is also named after him.
