Chongzhen The cylindrical body rising from a gently flaring foot to a trumpet mouth, the upper register finely painted with a continuous scene of scholars in a landscape with a monk and followed by boy attendants, the subtly raised mid-section with scrolling foliage, above a stylised lotus leaf lappet border. 34cm (13 1/2in) high
Provenance: from a Singaporean Private Collection formed in London in the 1970s and 1980s.

The scholar-official gesturing beneath the sun provides a rebus: the rising sun suggests a rise in prosperity. 'Pointing at the sun' (zhi ri) is a pun for 'day by day', suggesting the blessing zhiri gaosheng 指日高陞 (May you day by day rise in rank).
